Every Indian IPO with a reported grey-market premium, and the number of independent sources behind each figure. GMP is unregulated and self-reported: no exchange records it and there is no recourse. We show it because people ask for it, we show how thin the evidence is, and below we show how the market it guesses at has actually behaved.

How often does an Indian IPO actually open above its issue price?

Of the 1169 IPOs that have listed on the NSE since 2016, 889 (76%) opened above their issue price, at a median of +11%. A base rate, not a promise, and not what any single GMP is guaranteeing.

The two boards differ, and a blended figure flatters one of them. Mainboard issues opened above their issue price 71% of the time across 473 listings, at a median of +10%. SME issues, 80% across 696, at a median of +12%.

Built from the exchange's own past-issues record joined to its daily price archive, measured on the listing-day open. It describes a population. It is not a forecast for any single issue.

Has grey-market premium actually been right?

Across the 16 issues we followed from a GMP quote through to listing, the premium pointed the right way 100% of the time, and understated it by a median of 8 pp.

Common questions about IPO GMP

What is GMP in an IPO?

Grey-market premium is the unofficial amount above the issue price at which an IPO's shares change hands before they list. No exchange, regulator or clearing house records or audits it, there is no settlement guarantee, and the figures are self-reported by grey-market dealers. The full explainer →

Is IPO GMP reliable?

Across the 16 issues we followed from GMP to listing it pointed the right way 100% of the time. Treat it as a sentiment reading, not a forecast.

How often do IPOs list above their issue price?

Of the 1169 IPOs that have listed on the NSE since 2016, 889 (76%) opened above their issue price, at a median of +11%. That is a base rate across the whole population, not a prediction for any one issue.

Is the grey market legal in India?

The grey market is unofficial and unregulated. It is not an exchange platform, SEBI does not oversee it, and there is no recourse if a grey-market trade is not honoured. We report the premium because readers ask about it, and we label it for what it is.

Where does the GMP on this page come from?

Public aggregator listings, recorded with the time we saw them and the number of independent sources that agreed. Exchange data always takes precedence over an aggregator on this site, but no exchange publishes GMP, so a premium is always third-party by nature. How we source every figure →
